Worth the money vs Not worth the money at your wedding

As a wedding photographer, I’ve been to my fair share of weddings, so I have a pretty good advantage at seeing generally what works and what doesn’t when it comes to weddings - particularly as I’m there from morning prep to party time. Lot’s of things that are pretty common and popular, sometimes can be a bit of a waste, just as others that don’t seem a necessity during planning can actually bring a lot of value on the day.

Let’s get into it!!

Need a wedding photographer?

  1. Wedding favours - not worth it!

Lots of people in the wedding industry talk about this, but if you’ve got to buy 80 little gifts, it adds up and can go towards something else for your wedding (like extra flowers!)

They often get left behind at the wedding, particularly if they’re personalised with your wedding date on (sorry!) - something like chocolates is a nice gesture, but in my opinion doesn’t bring a lot of value and that saving can be put towards something else for your day.

2. Cones / bags for confetti - not worth it!

For me, it’s the effort of putting your confetti into tiny parcels that will get discarded later, when you could put your confetti in a gorgeous wicker basket and allow your guests to grab a huge handful to throw - don’t let them hold back!

3. Extra confetti / confetti canons - worth it!

The best confetti shots are the ones that have a sh*t tonne of confetti!!! Confetti canons are super effective also, definitely worth investing!

4. Matching bridesmaid PJs - not worth it!

I have an alternative for you, so don’t worry!! But you know the type I mean - yes, it’s great to have a morning aesthetic but are you going to wear your ‘maid of honour’ silk dressing gown again?

5. Plain matching PJs - worth it!!

They create the desired effect you’re looking for without being tacky, plus everyone is able to use again!

6. Photographer - worth it!

Well, who would have thought this would be on the list!! No seriously, we’ve all heard the horror stories of friends who have shot weddings… in this case, it’s best to get a professional and by that, I mean; someone with back up kit, someone with insurance, someone with experience, someone who knows what to do if it happens to be a dark and stormy day in August. Most importantly, someone that you get on with, trust and who’s work you LOVE!!

7. Videographer - worth it!

Videographers can capture your day in a way that photographers can’t - the way in which a person moves, or laughs, their voice, the speeches. No, you can’t hang it on the wall (or maybe some day you’ll be able to!) but it’s often one of the biggest regrets for most people! Again, they’ll be alongside you all day so best to make sure you love not only their work, but their personality! I’ve worked with plenty of great people, just ask if you’re looking for someone!
